Maintenance of Certification Overview

The Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program was created with input from thousands of physicians across the country. It provides physicians with a pathway to know that they are staying current in the medical knowledge they use to treat patients and to make important care decisions daily.

Board Certified Internal Medicine Specialists are eligible to receive 60 Practice Assessment Points towards MOC by participating in the vaxPACES program. The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) defines the benefits as follows:

  • The Practice Assessment option for earning MOC points gives ABIM Board Certified physicians the opportunity to participate in activities that help to improve the quality of patient care in their practice.

  • Quality Improvement/Practice Improvement (QI/PI) activities should include identifying an improvement opportunity in your practice, implementing a change to address that opportunity, and measuring the impact of your change.

  • You can earn MOC points for many QI/PI projects you are doing in practice through your medical specialty societies, hospitals, medical groups, clinics or other health-related organizations.

  • For external activities that were completed in the prior calendar year, ABIM will accept retroactive MOC credit through March 31.
